The Engineer's Today Page

The Today page is an engineer's day on one screen. It shows the jobs they're on today and tomorrow, taken from the calendar, with everything from the job record that they need on site. Nobody types anything twice, and nobody sends links.

It lives at /today on your ORCA address, and it's part of Site Clock, so the module needs to be switched on for your account. Engineers get to it by signing in by text, and they stay signed in on that phone.

What's on a Job Card

There's one card for each calendar event the engineer is assigned to, under Today and Tomorrow. Each card is filled from the job record the event is linked to (or named in the event's title), and shows:

  • the job reference, the client, and the event's start time
  • the job's Description
  • Site, with a Directions link that opens maps. The event's own location wins if it has one, as the job might be at a second site.
  • Contact, the first contact field on the job, with a phone number that dials when tapped
  • Scope, see below
  • Files, see below
  • Notes from the calendar event
  • a Clock on button

If nothing is on the calendar for them, the page says so.

The Scope Ticklist

Scope comes from the job's Ticklist field. If there isn't one, ORCA looks for a field called Scope, Scope of Work or Ticklist and shows its text. With a ticklist, each item is a big tap target made for gloves and cold hands. Tap an item to tick it, tap again to untick, and ORCA keeps who ticked it and when. The same ticks show on the job's own page in the office.

RAMS and Drawings

Files on the job show up as links on the card if they sit in a file field whose name contains RAMS, drawing, method, permit or risk. So a field called "RAMS" or "Drawings" works with no setting up. Files are opened through ORCA, so only people signed in can read them.

Clock On

The Clock on button opens that job on the engineer's own clock page, ready to go. Their clock link is made for them if they don't have one. See Site Clock for what happens next.

Adding It to the Home Screen

Today works like an app. At the bottom of the page, a reminder says to add it to the home screen. On an iPhone, that's the Share button then Add to Home Screen. On Android, it's the browser menu then Add to Home screen. After that it opens straight on Today.
